Terry Shackleford

Terry Shackleford is an Associate Professor of Biology at St. Mary’s University (StMU) in San Antonio, TX, where she is deeply committed to integrating research and teaching to prepare undergraduates for careers in the biomedical sciences. In 2023, she joined the NIGMS Undergraduate Research Training Initiative for Student Enhancement (U-RISE) T34 as a Program Coordinator at StMU. In this role, she is aims to assist in developing a research-driven, supportive community that provides students with meaningful research experiences, strong mentorship, and the necessary preparation for graduate school and beyond. Her engagement with the National Institutes of Scientific Teaching (NIST) began in 2018 when she attended a Regional Summer Institute just before starting her faculty position. Since then, she has actively contributed to the NIST community, embracing evidence-based teaching and inclusive scientific education. She served as a facilitator for Solve My Problem (SMP)/Addressing the Challenges of Teaching (ACT) from 2021 to 2023 and was a member of the NIST organizing committee since 2023. Now, as Secretary-Elect of NIST, she is excited to take on a more active role in supporting the community. In this position, she will work closely with the Executive Committee to maintain records while also assisting in communication and planning efforts. She is committed to ensuring that all members feel welcomed, supported, and connected. She is excited for this opportunity to serve NIST alongside our colleagues to strengthening NIST’s programs and grow scientific teaching community.
