I am a Teaching Professor in the Department of Genetics, Development, and Cell Biology at Iowa State University. I facilitate learning in my undergraduate introductory biology and genetics courses using several evidence-based strategies including collaborative, problem-based, and case study-based learning. I am also a Biology Education Researcher interested in translational research (research that informs teaching practices or can lead to teaching reform). My goal is to build STEM learning environments that honor and nurture a multitude of backgrounds and experiences in science.
I love that the NIST community is open to anyone interested in learning about evidence-based teaching. NIST is open to educators in all STEM fields, facilitating an interdisciplinary exchange of ideas. Membership structure minimizes barriers for participation. In addition, institutes and programs are structured to promote just and anti-racist scientific teaching practices. As Member At Large, I strive to support the mission of transforming STEM education through helping with organizational sustainability, practicing core goals by providing sustained engagement, and helping expand the STEM professional network.
