About the event

Join Shannon Seidel on Friday, March 13th, for a conversation about "Instructor Talk in new contexts."

What do you say in your classes that isn't about the topic you teach? Instructor Talk is a variable that has been studied in a variety of college Biology classroom contexts and refers to the non-content language (both positively- and negatively-phrased) that is used by instructors. It has been studied in both community colleges and four year institutions and identified and remembered by students so it is likely to be an important variable in setting the classroom culture and supporting learning. In this session, we will review the categories of Instructor Talk, explore evidence from studies that have been done to date, and consider how we could use Instructor Talk and how it might be used to support students in your specific classroom context.
